Let Us Be Cheaters

By Nipun Barua
(Originally in Bangla, Trans. by Freevoice)

Everywhere we cheat,
Sometimes, we cheat ourselves
And sometimes others
Sometimes, we cheat both

No autumn-fleecy-clouds in our thoughts
No feathers like swaying Kaash flowers occupy us
Dark rainclouds grip our dark thoughts

Is there a definition of cheating?
Cheaters play with our conscience, emotion and feeling,
Cast nets over me and you as usual, for this and that

We are sandwiched!
Pressurized from all sides,
And get trampled,

Nobody keeps us in mind,
Discard us like a cough!
They take our words and conscience as sin

If they think of us, they cannot wield power
And amass wealth, they know,
So, they take us as abominable, untouchable

Let’s be cheaters!
Let’s be sly like a fox!
And learn cheating, degeneration, immorality!

I write because there is some lie that I want to expose, some fact to which I want to draw attention, said George Orwell. As a writer, I never kowtow to the whims and dictates of the sacred godmen or godwomen, the political bigots and hypocrites, dealers of laymen, the dishonest and self-serving intellectuals, traders of religions, the betrayers of ‘other’ Indians who eke out a living by their sweat, who are living in fear for being lynched for this and that.
